I personally love hunting, the sport of it and my fascination with nature and wild life. I also greatly enjoy the time spent with the father, uncle and cousin, along with other family. My favorite hunting is whitetail deer season, specifically rifle season in PA. I think this year will be the first I get a doe license. I've only ever hunted buck and usually one buck between my father and I was enough meat in the freezer. We aren't out for just the meat is my point. This year however I plan to get a doe license because I have my own place, so I can utilize the meat all year round. Hunting is a sport, but not a sport to everyone and I understand that. I think it's a sport to me because I challenge myself every year to find a nice buck to shoot. You need to track them, scout them and basically understand their ways in order to be successful and I find great joy in that.
I just started archery hunting two years ago and it's nice to get out in the early season to hunt buck. However, it's not the same because my father, uncle and cousin don't hunt archery. I love going out in the woods with my family, we make a day out of it. If we are hunting deer, we will get up at 4:45a, 3 hours before light, go and get breakfast somewhere together and head out to the mountain which is about 1:15 away. We are in the woods from 6:00a until 5:00p (dark), assuming we don't get anything. Then we head to the local bar, have a few drinks, play some darts, some pool and head home around 8:30p, get some chili at home and call it a day. It's peaceful/relaxing, but then turns into an adrenaline rush/excitement once there is action in the woods. The feeling I get just seeing a deer is enough for me to go back every year. I love being able to see wild life go on with its daily life, it's amazing. I am very respectful of the woods and the animals. I don't just go out to kill to kill, I have a purpose. I only shoot mature bucks for the sport and this year I will shoot a doe, to feed my family. I don't need the meat and can survive without it, but the deer population needs managed and controlled and I pay for my deer. They are beautiful creatures and it's an honor to be among them in the woods. The things I've learned over the years can only be learned in the woods. It's remarkable the amount of knowledge you get while out hunting, not only just about hunting and animals.
So, yeah, I'm a huge hunter. Absolutely treasure the time with my family, specifically my Dad. It's a shame because not a lot of young hunters are out there anymore so they don't understand what I mean. I know for a fact I enjoy the woods, the great time, the challenge and the thrill of hunting. We also hunt grouse, rabbit, turkey, coyote, bear and squirrel. I plan on getting out in the woods alot more this year, pre-season, putting my time in to better myself and understand deer movements a little better. If I'm not hunting in the woods, I enjoy hiking, walking trails and just seeing nature. I know it's not for everybody, but I sure do love it.
