KTM 450

They're cheap, they're reliable, and they're powerful.

Wouldn't recommend a 250.. they get boring.

Go for anything after 2000.

I had a 2003 in great condition I picked up for 2500.

Btw, you should consider Mountain biking before dirt biking... it will save you a lot of pain and money, trust me.

Have you looked into quadding? Can go more places, but I guess you live in a plains type area I live in a rain forest :/

I found I got bored of my dirt bike after a few years and been happy with my quad for like 5-6 years now

When falling from a dirtbike dirt will feel like pavement.

Just get a fucking motorcycle if you want motorcycle experience. I know people that have ridden street bikes sense they could and they wont touch a dirtbike lol

But just get a honda/yamaha 450, check CL I am sure you can find one fairly cheap

I ride/have ridden both, I learned on a 1976 Harley davidson 175 enduro rode it on dirt, had knobby tires etc, then when I was 16 I rode it on the road, was a totally different experience. a moped on the road is closer to a road bike than than a dirt bike on the dirt. The road is pretty easy really it's easier than riding different terrain on a dirt bike. once you learn to use the clutch and brake properly and to lean to turn and not turn your handle bars its all a cake walk.

Lol dirt biking and motorcycles are very different bro.

Mountain biking will help you with dirt biking, immensely.

Riding a street bike is the only way you get better at riding a street bike. Different dangers.

You can go more places with a quad??? Maybe if you cant ride very good.

How do you get bored of a motorcycle but a quad is more of a thrill... Do you just ride in the mud or something?

@ OP in your price range the only thing you could buy that will be decently reliable would be a late 90's early 2000's 250 2 stroke. Any 4 stroke you may be able to buy for $1200 is gonna have issues and they are alot more expensive to fix on a 4 stroke. I LOVE 4 strokes but for your budget and being its your first bike id say grab like a 2000 YZ 250 or something similar and call it a day.

It will be tough getting used to the powerband but that bike will have plenty of power for now. For as big as you are id say once you have the $$ trade up to a newer 4 stroke 450 and you will fall in love. They have power everywhere across the board.
