This will be my first gun purchase. My friend told my to pay no more than 400 but right now with the demand high as fawk it seems more like 600. All Ive sern where at online brokers as well so thats prolly part of it. Also, how far should I zero it in at, for home and property protection, and what are some cool and useful mods I can do?

Unless you live alone in the boonies with no neighbors for miles an sks as a home defense weapon is not smart at all. A 7.62 round will penetrate MANY walls for a long distance. This means when you miss(which you will) that bullet could potentially strike your son, daughter, wife or any neighbors. And then you end up being locked up for wrongful death, reckless manslaughter etc

sks would be a terrible home defense weapon

go for a shotgun
it would be much safer, more reliable, and easier to maintain

This.

I keep the SKS around but it is far from the first thing I would grab for home protection..

I have a m-44 which is a 7.65x54 cal . I have it loaded in the house ready to rock, but I wouldn't use for intruders, Pistols are much better for indoors home protection , imo. Keep the sks ready for if they try to get away, or siege your house, etc. Cabellas sells armor piercing rounds in 7.62 for $60 a box of 20.
