So, i have decided to get into outdoor climbing and caving this summer.
just ordered a Black Diamond Momentum SA Harness and am now in the market for a top quality rope, shoes, belay device, cams, carabiners, calk bag, portaledge and what ever else i might need.
anyone here who climbs have any gear recommendations, or can think of anything else that i might need?
i have someone who is going to give me the run down and teach me some climbing techniques this spring, but as of right now all i have ever done is a bit of free climbing.
my goal is to do some big wall this summer.

id check out the evolv defy shoe. they are definitely the most comfortable shoe.
any belay device should be fine. there are some auto locking ones, but w/e
same with carabiner. any that are made for climbing should work. i think almost all of them now are twisting auto locking, but some may not be, so get one that is.
any chalk bag will be fine too. just pick a cool looking one.

are you going to be climbing on routes people have already done? if so, you shouldnt need cams and stuff.
for ropes, id try to go with a friend that has some, unless you dont care to spend a shit ton of money on them. i dont have a recommendation for them because i use friends/ones in the gym, but the cheapest u will find for a decent size is 150 bucks

where do you live btw?

I Live in southern IL. We have some pretty good routes at Jackson Falls that i will be climbing, ranging from 5.8s-5.13s. Going to be doing some climbing and caving in TN and KY also.
Been researching on what shoes to get for a few days now. I checked into the Evolvs defys that you mentioned, they looked great performance and comfort wise but they are notorious for smelling absolutely putrid after very little use. Seems this is caused by the lining that Evolv used in them.

I am leaning towards getting the Fire Ten Galileos http://www.rockclimbing.com/gear/Shoes/Climbing_Shoes/Velcro/Galileo_Climbing_Shoe_2927.html
only down sides with them is they are not the best for toe hooking and are a little pricey. They are supposed to be super sticky tho.

Also was considering the La Sportiva Miuras http://www.rockclimbing.com/gear/Shoes/Climbing_Shoes/Lace_Up/Miura_Shoe_303.html.
These would probably be better performance wise, but I like the fact that Galileos do not stretch as much and the break in time is less.

I am going to invest into some ropes but not sure which yet. Probably a good static and a bi-color 10.1 Sterling dry rope to start with. http://www.backcountry.com/sterling-biathlon-pro-10.1mm-rope
also thinking about getting a 5 step ladder for spots that I cannot yet do.
Probably will invest into cams too for when I am doing off trail hiking and encounter a obstacle that has not yet been routed. Not sure what to get yet tho, have not researched into them.

Also i ordered a copy of The Self Coached Climber after hearing good things about it.
About to make my own wall too for practicing on. however, if i do make my own wall i am going to probably need another pair of shoes since i don't want to waste the Galileos or Miuras on anything besides outdoor climbing.

Not to shabby of a setup :)
may i ask how long you have been climbing? reason for asking is that i was wanting to incorporate finger board training into my training but was told that for a beginner it is best to stay away from them until my tendons and ligaments adjust to the force.

ive been climbing off and on for about a year now. my friend who owns the wall is a very experienced climber though. he spend all winter in china and thailand climbing. and the year before that he was in italy climbing, and before that thailand again lol.
if you get a fingerboard, just be very careful. the sloapers, jugs and pinches (if it has it, mine does) are safe to use. the finger holes though should be used with caution. you can probably hang on them for a little bit, but work slowly into pulling on them. some of the holes are bigger than others, so work on the bigger ones first.
just take it slow. nothing is worse than ripping a tendon. i did it before in my thumb. not climbing related but it hurts like a mofo. you should also get a donut. that will help increase your finger and forearm strength a lot.
