Anyone into this? I want to start this fall but I'm not really sure what kind of bow to get and whatnot. Any tips or advice would be great.

crossbow for people who have little aptitude and want ezmode.

compound bow if you are actually into archery.

recurve bow for hunting if you are fucking hardcore (this requires over 40 pounds to be held when drawn, very tiring for hunting)

i personally target shoot every week with a compound just because fun. id be able to gank an animal np up to like 60-70 yards probably.

once you go bow hunting for the first time you'll never want to rifle hunt again.
the thrill is amazing and you can get more than 1 in the same spot

60-70 yards is way too far of a bow shot on a whitetail. anything over 40 is risky. the goal is to kill the animal, not hurt it.
crossbows (in NY at least) are only allowed during the regular season (when people are shotgun hunting)

I agree with the poster above me... once you bow hunt, every other method of hunting is dull.

@OP - I would suggest a Martin, PSG, or a Matthews. Just go to a bow shop, shoot ~ 10 different bows and pick whatever fits you best. And be prepared to spend ~500 - 1k for a good bow, all rigged up.

How much for a good recurve bow and set of arrows?

Sorry for the delay, been out hunting!
My buddy bought a recurve bow this past summer (bad ass to go bow hunting with, but definitely shorter range ~ 10-25 yards max) and it cost him around $400 just for the bow. I think the hand release for recurves is about $15, and then arrows can range from $10 per arrow to $20 per arrow. I shoot Rage broadheads and those cost $50 for 3.

So in total, you're probably looking ~ $500.

longer season for bow than rifle

good bow with run you around 450-550 carbon arrows another 100-200 depending on the amount hardness and heads you are using
