Trail has many benefits over roads.
A lot safer. Don't have to worry about traffic.
Less pounding on the body, easier on the legs.
Usually trails have curves and hopefully hills. Get to work-out the leg/hip and core muscles, gets your heart rate elevated yet are not pounding the legs because of running a fast pace.
Mental benefits! Trails means woods or other growth. You are running not out in the open. Brings ones "hunter vs. hunted" natural instincts out.
Running on trails can also be a benefit in races. For example a competitor is 10 meters behind you. Getting into some trails with "blind turns" you surge hard. Your competition which was only 10 meters behind you didn't realize you surged on the blind turn, now suddenly you are 25 meters ahead. He didn't expect that, is now looking over his shoulder. You broke him.
Few things to be careful of on trails- ankle twisters, like roots and branches. The more trail running you do, the better you become at it.
At the same time, trail running helps you with running form. Usually trail running forces you to shorten your stride. Pay attention to where your foot is striking.
