I'm a bit of a beginner, and am looking to purchase my first road bike, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

I don't know a whole lot about bikes.

I've found this one: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/windsor/wellington1_IX.htm

and I've also looked at the 2.0 and 3.0 versions, I've read some mixed reviews on this bike, some people say it's worth the investment to spend ~$600 on an entry level bike, and some people say it is an absolutely incredible deal for $300, and that it is easily the best entry level bike on the planet at that price.

If anyone has any suggestions or more helpful info, that'd be great! Thanks.

I know nothing of road bikes but when I bought my mountain bike i was looking to spend under 500 and ended up around 650. im quite glad that i spent the extra as you really get what you pay for. even my $650 bike is lower end but it does great for me.

Anything under $1500 is a piece of shit and you wouldn't enjoy it.

Proven fact.

bro last year i put 10-12k miles on a schwinn le tour sport (entry level road bike) that i payed about 550-600 for, then a few upgrades (rims, clipless pedals, saddle, better cables, ect) and i enjoyed every mile on it.
but i do feel you, the better components is worth the money, that is if you got it to spend, unfortunately i did not.

@smasht, before you decide on what bike to get. you need to think about what kind of riding you will be mainly doing, such as mainly flats, or if you plan on climbing a lot, things of that nature. make sure to get one that is geared for what you need.

and btw bikesdirect is a good site to get one from, there is a little assembly required but nothing major. the biggest thing you will have to do is adjust the derailers.
but make sure you at least invest in some clipless pedals and some good solid cycling shoes. makes all the difference, and some bibs/jerseys/gloves and a good helmet if you are able to afford them.

check out this one, worth the extra $ http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/schwinn/schwinnletoursportxi.htm

btw harry legs is a no go, be ready to shave em or ride alone lol

and for your entertainment...

I bought a POS Firenze Gl5000 25+ y/o bike for 5 Bucks. Put about 50 bucks into it in parts (mainly tires/grip) and cleaned it up. Rides perfect and haven't really had any problems.

If you don't know much about bikes, I might suggest this route. It's nice to know how bikes work and how to fix something if it goes wrong. That way when you do spend a good amount on a bike, you can maintain it like it should be done.

yup its much cheaper than going to a LBS. just buy the tools that you need, as you need them. youtube has all the vids you will need to give you maintenance instructions. check out parktools vids, or IntownBicycles. saved me a lot of cash on repairs/part replacements.

go to a good local bike shop (not an rei) and talk to them, they'll find you something. if you're cheap, take their recommendations and google them, then find something similar on craigslist. my first road bike was $550, a giant defy and i loved it. used to be very into bmxing and mountain biking, and i can say i haven't touched my mountain bike since i've bought a roadbike..it's sad, really.

i just got back from a crosscountry trip last week, but that was on a surly.

oh, and use competitivecyclist. there's always good codes on roadbikereview's hot deal's section
