Taurus Stainless Steel .44 Magnum or Ruger Super Redhawk of the same caliber? Topics of discussion are:

Price?
Purpose?
Dependability?
Range/accuracy/power?
Customer Support?
Style?

Super Redhawk:

Taurus 446SS

Price: I'm not too sure, but these are .44 magnums, so I'm sure they're not cheap by all means. The Ruger is probably more expensive than the Taurus
Purpose: I want a big chunk of steel hanging on my thigh while hunting.
Dependability: Ruger is celebrated for their dependability, I'm unsure of the Taurus
Range/accuracy/power: No idea. Probably close enough to each other to not make a difference to a shooter of my level (intermediate)
Customer Support: I don't own a gun from either company so nothing to say here.
Style: Completely subjective and irrelevant to performance. That said, I think the Taurus looks way cooler.

Ive shot a few revolvers. .44 mag is the biggest that I recall shooting (not that there are too many larger choices)
Revolvers are cool, but I wouldnt buy one to carry personally. I really want a FNP-45 tactical after seeing a few youtube videos lately.

So i guess that brings the question up is 10 rounds of DA/SA semi-auto .45 better or worse then DA/SA .44 magnum?

I have shot both a fair amount. The Ruger seems to be referred to as the "better gun" by most people I talk to but for me the added weight on the Taurus made it a little easier to shoot.

Any reason in particular you are set on a .44?

Hm. Kind of a tough call; if you're gonna be carrying as your "Plan B" anti-bear repellant, you're gonna want something big.

Neither is, of course, guaranteed to do anything but p!ss the bear off, unless you get a REALLY good series of shots in. That said:

The 7 1/2" barrel Super Redhawk weighs in at 53 oz.

I can't tell which model of Taurus that is, but the full barrel underlug should help with the recoil. Downside: makes the gun heavier. I think (?) this model is about 10 oz. (give or take) heavier than the Ruger.

Dependability between the two should be comparable. If there's a range anywhere around you where you can rent either, I'd go down and put a couple of boxes of ammo through each, and see which is more comfortable for you.

I'd also see what holster options there are for each (unless you have a local leathersmith that you like.) If it's gonna be your Plan B, you need to practice drawing it, A LOT.

See the post below yours; bear repellent.

I don't mind the weight, so reduced recoil is a huge plus, especially because 44. mag is such a powerful round. I'm a good shot (good enough to hit a bear several times as it approaches melee range) but of course as stress increases accuracy decreases.

The Taurus is the 446SS. Stands for 44 caliber, 6" barrel, stainless steel.

ofc, ofc.

Hm. If this is your Plan B while hunting, I'm guessing you're going with some kind of long-gun (rifle or shotgun; not sure what you're hunting, or whether the critter in question co-habitates areas with bears.)

Like I said before, whatever you wind up going with, you're gonna want to practice drawing, and a lot. Personally, I'd see if I could find an old mattress or something that I can drop my long-gun on, while I draw the revolver.

Drop long-gun, draw. Reholster, pick up long-gun, rinse and repeat. (I'm a fan of simulation training; I do something similar with my martial arts group with practice knives. You could probably even practice with a blank that you cut out of a 2 x 4 or something.)

If you shoot with your long-gun on a sling, it changes things slightly, but I'd still encourage lots of practice drawing the revolver. Muscle memory ftw.
