I personally wouldn't by Burton . It just sucks that Burton owns quite a few other brands, one of my favorites being analog. I would stick to anolog, special blend, four square, or Volcom. Check dogfunk.com or backountry.com for a color you like. Backountry will have more plain single colored ones. Get one that is 20,000+mm .

Were do you ride? Wet or dry snow? Cold or mild climate?

thats funny that you said you wouldnt buy Burton, but you listed 3 other companies for him to check out that are ALL owned by Burton (analog, special blend and four square)

if i were you id check out http://www.trusnow.com/, theres always crazy sales going on and a shitload of choices.
as far as a cheap, non flashy jackets go, id check out 686, rome or airblaster. all of them are relatively cheap and super durable. rome outerwear is my personal favorite

Especially without a reason to avoid Burton...

Just gave my opinion on the gear. The Burton coat and pants I bought a few years ago sucked so I gave it to a friend. The pants were shit and the jacket was cold and powder skirt snaps never held. Analog jacket and 1Z I have are going strong on 3 seasons, special blend pants, four square pants all still going strong. Don't get me wrong they show wear and tear but I will not be buying new gear this year. I spend 50 days on the mountain a year and won't waist my hard earned money on Burton clothing... just my 2 cents.

I've owned several burton boards (custom, blunt, uninc) and some burton equipment and never had problems with any of it. Burton has a wide range of prices and gear, obviously if you get the cheapest crap burton has to offer you get what you pay for. Same goes to any company that sells higher and lower end stuff. My burton custom was great, my burton custom bindings have been going strong for several seasons aside from a baseplate that exploded (A whole 4.00$) when I cased a big table. Lastly my Driver X boots from burton are warm, adjustable, moldable to your foot, have the zip strings and look pretty sick. I'd vouch for burtons mid-high range gear all day any day. Some people here are saying all their crap from burton is falling apart or doesnt work etc. I suggest they just learn to take care of their gear. My friends dad has some burton gear over 10 years old and it still works great. I've even used a pair of his 10+ year old burton boots and they were fucking awesome. Basically no support compared to the boots nowdays but you could tweek the fuck out of any grab it was awesome. I usually go up 50+ times a season as does my friend and his dad. If gear can last that long and get used that frequently (hard) it's got my vouch.

im not saying that burton gear is bad, their warranty program is hands down on of the best in the industry...but in the end, youre paying for the name "Burton". you can get equal, or better gear for 1/2 the cost if you look around at your options.
unless youre the #1 shaun white fan boy, or have a shit load of money to blow on 'top of the line' gear, youre better off buying something else. ive ridden Burton product/owned the gear and honestly you cant tell any difference
