Soft mesh should never be an option, it's by far the worst type. It's really inconsistent and never forms a good pocket.
I personally like hard mesh, especially the bigger diamonds like 6 diamond. They are a lot more consistent, especially in the rain, and after they're broken in form the best pockets with some nice hold.

My first goalie string was soft mesh. It seemed to help with reducing rebounds but on wet grass that shit fucked up on clears. I switched to hard mesh, once it was broken in and formed it worked like a charm.

If you're attack/midd hard mesh is your only choice, imo.
