What do I need to do to get started? I ride downhill/freeride, but there's no races locally, so I'm thinking of getting started in bmxing.

First off, I LOVEEEE BMX. It's alot of fun and no disrespect to skateboarders but it requires alot more strength and gets you in shape and all in all is funner to get more air and do biger transfers and not rack yourself ona rail.
As with any pros advice they will tell you to master the bunnyhop... get started just bunny hopping up curbs or set a skateboard or 2by4 piece of wood up and practice jumpin over that. If you dont have any local skateparks then dont fear because street bmx is the funnest thing in the world... each day you can go out and explore new areas do random trix off of anything. you dont even have to be pro to have fun haha. have the time im just bunny hopping onto things like school rails or park tables or parking cement blocks. You just gota set your mind to it and not half ass anything. And again master the bunny hop everything else will follow after that.
I wish you the best of luck man bmx is fun as hell :)

I can bunny hop on my dh bike, and my old ass bike with no suspension :) (Only about 6 inches on my dh bike, but hey, 45 lbs is a lot to throw around.)

But I mean like bmx dirt jumps, and racing.

Ohhh ok sorry for the confusion. Well still ive been through it all. Though youve given me further clarification somtimes i cant comprehend things to well after 2 days no sleep.
So to my understanding ill try and answer as best i can haha forgive any mistakes or misunderstandings.
i purposly bought my first bmx bike alittle heavyer so that id build up muscle and eventually when i get a lighter bike like a harro or diamond back i could bunny hop like 1 foot to 2 feet back wheel to doing flatland 360s. thats good that you can get 6 inchs on 45pounds haha, if i was your trainer or coach id tell you to practice on that bike even if you had a bmx raceing bike.
Anyway i used to race in utah when i was a kid and the principals are pretty much the same, you gota learn to pump around dirt corners to gain speed without pedaling, and to get more air off the dirt jumps in a race. And when it comes to learning to do huge dirt transfers and jumps it gets scarey, the first time i did it i was 8 and i remember being scared as hell staring at the jump even though it was only about a 4 foot gap. i didnt know what i was doing or how to calibrate how much pump to give or even what tire to land on. but i just went for it and i landed it front whel first and almost face planted but got lucky. Anyway my point is theres no easy way to learn you just gota go all out. and for the love of god ALWAYS land back wheel first to save your wrists or even your life lol.
I'm not sure as to how much skill you have thus i cant give solid advice but honestly man the best online video advice you can get is at sportskool.com. they have every type of bmx video from street to vert to dirt to racing you name it they have videos on it. Thats the best video instrunctional site i know and have ever found though some of the guys accents reeeeeeally annoy me, my love for bmx gives me patiance.
Leme know how shit goes for you or if you need further advice.bmx reallly is a passion for me i love hearing about successes of anykind :).
And again GL
