Best fishing story.. it's sort of ongoing and is one of the weirdest, most unusual, unexplainable things I've ever come across. All fish in this story are largemouth bass and are scale weighed.
My friend has a lake on his property (probably 1000 yards by 500 yards roughly) that is a lake basically for the farming they do and its been there as long as anyone can rememeber, or as far back as we can go on Google Earth online. 30+ years easily and is just a natural lake that forms from the rains.
One day my friend went to fish there and after not catching anything, on one of his last casts of the day he nailed an 8lbers-8.5lber on a bleeding spinnerbait.
After this ridiculous fish, for years when we were in high school we used to fish this place, I'm talking 20-30 times a summer if not more... time after time we would fail and go back to the smaller pond up the street where we can watch 1 and 2 lbers all day. And it wasnt our skill because we could go anywhere, any lake, etc and nail fish all day long but something about this place it just wasnt producing.
Well 3 summers ago on some random day, we decide "ughh fine lets go try it" and it was unbelievable... Throwing buzz baits, I probably caught 10-15 fish in a single trip, with at least 8-10 being 5lb+, a few 6's, biggest ended up being a fish just touching 9lb. This is replicated by all my friends obviously, its not just me catching them. Simply walking down the bank, just murdering.
We're all ridiculously confused, we cant figure out why, whats happen, what the fish are doing, etc..
This continues for roughly 2 months and I become obsessed, I start going in the mornings and at nights, nailing ridiculously big bass from the shore, all topwater (buzzbaits and frogs) and I think I have like my own personal candy land.
My friends do decent but not as good as me, I'm definitely the most obsessed with bassing, have the best gear, fished the most, etc.
To try and wrap this up, that summer (3 years ago) goes by and I go back to school, come back 2 years ago and its nothing like the year prior, I go back during the same time of year, same baits, etc... but something is off, I get a few here and there but NOTHING like 3 seasons ago.. I still manage to catch probably 15-20 or so over 5lb's but I really have to work for em and it might only be 1 a trip or 1 every other trip.. etc.
Fast forward to last summer, theres some decent ones, a few 7s an 8 or two, but again nothing like that one year. I end up crank baiting a lot this year because the top water just wasnt working...
I end up dumping my bass boat in the lake which was definitely sketchy to say the least... almost didnt make it out.. but I still did it like 3 time haha. I troll the lake watching my Lowrence seeing if theres and big drop offs, valleys, humps, rocks, etc where the fish might be hiding.... nothing. The bottom of the lake is boring as can be... 4-6 feet deep mostly, a very slow taper from one side to the other, sandy bottom, absolutely nothing..
This year is coming and I will try again and have never been so confused by a place in my entire life.
The fact that we didnt catch anything for years then all the sudden everyone is catching 5-9 pound super aggressive bass?! Is weird to say the least. Those fish didnt just pop up in the last year, they obviously have been living in there for years to achieve that size..
Me and my friend were actually talking about going to the pond referenced in the beginning where we catch 1-2 pounders all day tomorrow because we dont feel like going to this place and getting skunked.
Hopefully someone enjoys this painfully long story and has some tips for me because at this point I am just dumbfounded.
Oh and also my friend has shot like 30+ pound carp in this lake with his bow and we've caught 1-2lb crappies. EVERYTHING IN THE LAKE IS HUGE!
One day I went to go bass fishing on the shore and I couldnt even run my buzz bait down the shore line because there were so many carp up against the bank... my buzzer was literally bouncing off fish. I assume this was some sort of mating? I've probably been to this place 250 times and exactly ONE time I have seen this, one morning it was.
It's just such an odd place, I cant even begin to explain it.
