[x] chess. you gotta start when you're super young. you typically have to be a master (top 1% in the world) before you're 20, then study 5h+/day. and tournaments are brutal. sitting for 6 hours trying not to lose your concentration.

Chess is not a sport. It is an activity that takes skill and relies on competition, but it is not a sport because it does not feature displays of athleticism.

which dictionary are you using for your definition? the preparation involved isn't just mental but also physical. it certainly requires coordination and a great deal of stamina. elder people have a huge disadvantage compared to people in their 20s and 30s. Korchnoi is the only one i'm aware of listed in the world's strongest in his 70s

It depends really on the ratio of kids who play the sport in their lifetime

vs

# of professional athletes

Basketball out of the list has the least pro players, but i dont think it has the largest pool and is very based on born genetics(height) more than other variables. So idk

U can say hockey, but i know 2 pros from highschool, and 4-5 from my city.
I have never personally known a pro fb or baseball player. But thats just because of where i live.
The different skills it requires for the sport do not matter, because it is a simply a matter of the number of people who can compete at a greater level.

The actual answer is individual sports like tennis, golf, etc.

To become a pro in any of these sports is much much harder to accomplish realistically and statistically
