i say this because the metal count does not matter. if all counties had the same number of athletes participating in the same events, then metal count would mater. as it is, the country with the most athletes has a greater chance at winning more metals. with such an unfair comparison, i cant see how metal count matters.

I think its a matter of preference to how you want to judge the medal count.

Most sites are measuring the overall success by the number of golds, including the Sochi 2014 website. If by number of golds, Canada is ranked second at the moment with the US at 3rd. If it's by total medals, Canada is tied for second with the US leading.

Which is why I think gold medal count is better than total. Or maybe give them all some weight, like 5-3-1.

a points system based on the top 10 finishers in each event would be interesting. or even top 5
