Well you're comparing one of the best contracts in the league to one of the worst and most unique (because the whole reason he was paid was the salary cap situation), but even still, they aren't the same player.
Tristan: played 9,621 minutes last 4 seasons
Davis: played 6,111 minutes last 4 seasons
Tristan: age 25
Davis: age 27
Tristan: 22nd
in the league in Win Shares
Davis: 39th
Tristan plays more significantly more minutes on a significantly better team.
Davis is a great player on an incredibly unfair contract so to compare to him doesn't mean Tristan's is terrible, especially when Tristan is the more valuable asset (even if Ed Davis had the better season).
We couldn't sign another player. Signing Tristan to that contract was inarguably the better decision.
Also contract is tradeable.
