Well there are just a lot of great skaters in the netherlands, but it's not the fault of the Dutch that the sport is becoming less competitive internationally (and i don't think it will stay that way either), i think other strong speed skating countries like Norway, Canada and the USA should take a look at what they are doing wrong. Neither do i hear you complaining about either the Luge or skeleton events (in which germany is very succesful).
On topic of the lots of different distances, the same goes for swimming at the olympics (where you don't hear anyone crying when Phelps wins 8 medals) or for the different races at athletics.
On topic: another 2 medals for the Netherlands at speed skating, again a distance which in this case the germans and Norwegians used to dominate, now they're not even competing for the medals.
first of all, i'm the first to agree with you about the swimming events at the summer olympics, there are most definitely too many, but this thread is about winter olympics.
and i don't complain about skeleton (where germany hasn't won a single medal btw) which has only TWO events or luge, which has exactly FOUR events because speed skating has double the events those have COMBINED!
again, i'm not taking anything away from the athletes. although many people suspect doping behind this utter dominance i say as long as there is no proof they are innocent. my only point is that there are too many events. after all this is the winter olympics and not the speed skating olympics...
