What gives the state the moral authority to tell me that I can't own a gun?

There have been many cases of people getting shot and killed in gun-free zones. The law prevented the innocent victims from carrying, which could have saved their lives.
I know of a case where someone got shot during an armed robbery in a store/bank. The victim had to leave his gun in the car because that was the law. That law cost him (and possibly others) his life. Because some bureaucrat sitting at a desk somewhere decided he should not have the right to defend himself.
