It's pretty bad, but he has had some real bad luck with 3 crashes, one of them pretty bad and taking it's toll on his body. That last crash caused him some damage and really slowed him down, and took away his chances of winning it. Since that crash, knowing that he can't win it now, he's lost his motivation, and is now falling behind even faster.
Oh well, he's been one of the luckiest riders ever regarding crashes over the years, so it was bound to catch up with him.
