Each team can only have 13 players on the team, and basketball is a very popular sport everywhere. Nothing to do with basketball being more challenging then the other sports, there's just low demand and high supply.
That's a good point. Basketball is the second most popular sport in the world that is played globally other than soccer and not many roster spots are available. It's really difficult to play professionally - not just in the United States - because the odds are against you. There are several baseball leagues, not just the MLB, and many roster spots open. A great athlete like Tracy McGrady, who was an NBA superstar during his younger days, has now become a baseball player (pitcher) at 34 years old for the Sugar Land Skeeters. It's never too late to pursue a baseball dream because the art of pitching doesn't have any boundaries, but I don't think you can expect to pursue a career in the other sports in your mid 30s. Maybe bowling.
