right on. i used to brush those scent stats off until i seen my neighbors dog follow my scent trail to my deer stands at sprinting speed.
ive tried tieing my shirt on the opposite trails crossed creeks tried different scent blockers, but that dog can follow my scent right up ladders its pretty insane. when he overshoots my trail he will instantly double back and regain scent. its like his nose is tied to me by a rope.
now if a bear is 7 times better than that i have to call bs, because my neighbors dog can smell me from a quarter mile away lol.
Black Bears: The area inside a black bear's nose, called the nasal mucosa, is 100 times greater than ours.
Conservative estimates of a black bear's sense of smell state that a black bear can smell a food source from over a mile away, while other sources claim a black bear can smell food from over two miles away.
More generous estimates place a black bear's sense of smell between 18 and 20 miles, which may sound extreme, until you learn that polar bears, the black bear's cousin, have been known to follow seals for up to 40 miles.
