Just got an Okuma Celio 8' baitcast rod and an Abu Garcia Black Max bait caster reel for $25.

I fucking love Offer Up, both are brand new!

backlashes are exactly why I avoid casting reels

With some practice I rarely get them anymore. I find with the higher test braid it's much easier to get then out. A bad cast will cause them. It's really just getting use to the caster and stopping the bait with you thumb at the right time.

Did you tie your braided line onto mono when you put it on your baitcaster?

I started with mono. But now that I've got the hang of the baitcaster I use braided. I feel like the 40- 50 lb test has no memory, which means I don't get all those damn loops in my line like I would with mono, and since I've started using 50 lb braid I havnt had a backlash that I havnt been able to get out withing 30 seconds. Monk was giving me the worst birds nests

I just use a mono line to fill the reel and then tie in braided. I've got 125 yards of 15lb braid and maybe 50 of mono, just helps getting the braided line snug. Never in my life have I experienced a birds nest/backlash.

I've got probably 1/3 of my reel with a mono backing just to save myself some braided line.

Went and took the gf and kid fishing today.
The gf was having a horrible time, couldn't cast for shit, reeling looked fucked, and then I noticed she had a left handed reel. After swapping out she was having a blast.

Didn't catch anything but I finally got to put my new setup to use and it's fucking beautiful.

After finally doing more research on the pole I found out it's an Ultra-Light Kokanee rod, 2-6 LW. It was fucking money, so sensitive compared to my old Medium-Heavy pole. I was casting twice as far if not farther than my spinning setup. Can't wait till Saturday, opening day for lakes and I'll be getting to use my pole again!

Ultra lights are definitely the way to go if they can cast what you want. So much more fun when you get a fish on.

I use ultra light rods for all my trout and salmon fishing (I do use Medium Heavy for Pike and bass though for obvious reasons).

This is my first UL, usually run LM-MH. I caught like a 5-6" yesterday and it was a blast.

My buddy wants to do a lot of jetty fishing, sea bass/Ling cod, and now that I busted the handle on my ugly stick I have an excuse to get a new jetty pole!
