Ok I'm still not getting the point of the braided line and then more line ontop of that. Am is upload to switch out between the braided line when I wanna fish for bigger fish like catfish. Or am I suppose to use only a little bit of braided at the beginning of the reel? I'm sorry but like I said just starting back up and the last time I fished was when I was a kid so I isn't really know to much seeing as it was only bobber fishing with walmart poles

If you buy a medium-heavy rod with a '4000 reel
You could use it for both fish

The only thing you need now is a line
As u will use this set uo for both fish, you need something strong enough to hold a catfish but small enough to catch a bass

If you use 20 pound normal line....like mono or fluorocarbon, it will be too thick and u will most likely not catch any bass and as the line is pretty thick you may only be able to put 70-90 yard of line on ur reel

If you use 6-10 pounds mono/fluorocarbon you won't be able to hold a catfish

as I said, 20 pounda braid is as thick as 6 pound mono so it will not scare bass and it is also strong enough to hold a catfish

You will spool easily 150 yard of 20 pounds braid on a '4000 reel

And since it has a very thin diameter, you will make longer cast even with light lures

But the line is like a rope and it is still pretty visible so you need a fluorocarbon leader....I usually put 3-8 feet of fluorocarbon

The fluoro is nearly invisible in the water

i would rather buy an used reel then an used rod....there could be some invisible damage and the rod could snap on a trophy

Well I went digging up in the barn and I found a few reels. I'm yet to do any research on them but I'll post them to see what u guys think an if u can help me out any. The only badge is on that blue one that I have a pic of and a close up of. The black one looks like it had a stamp or some sort of identification on the opposite side of the crank

some old reel...
if i were to choose, the blue one seem more recent
altho they would need a ton and a half of lub/oïl and a real good Inside cleaning so it could work like it used to

it's far from what I'm used to fish with but I have a friend that is still fishing with his grand pa tackle and he has pretty much the same reel as your black one...he could cast a decent distance once I put good line and oiled/lub the whole inside

Alright that's what I was planning on doing. Although is there a way I can find out the recommended line without the make or model? Bc I don't see it stamped or stickerd anywhere
