Admittedly, there are hunters that are out just to kill things, DM, but they are in the vast minority. Hunting has its purposes. Personally, I hunt because to me it means a week at the cabin with the men of the family hanging out, playing cards, telling stories, eating too much food... it's a tradition and camaraderie thing for me. Or some farmers may hunt because they are sick of watching deer rip up the outer 20m of their bean fields. Or some hunt because they like meat and enjoy the peace of mind that comes from killing their food humanely and efficiently rather than buying it in plastic trays from a disgusting slaughterhouse where the animals lived their entire lives in 4x10 crates. Let's also not ignore that the bulk of lands in the country set aside as public access for sportsmen and for wildlife habitat are paid for by...? Any guesses? Hunter dollars. I don't know how many acres of protected habitat have been created by the Pittman-Robertson act, but I can assure you that it's many, many times more than have been created by anti-hunters.

But alas, I am prattling on about a topic that happens to be of great interest to me and probably not so much to you, so I'll stop

Why do you call a deer an 8 point if it only has 4 on each side.
At least on the west coast we call them by how many points are on one side.
So your 6 point is really just a 3.

Both systems have merit.

On the one hand, the total point system is more consistent in that it's always just a total point count, whereas with the "western" system, you can call an 8 pointer a "4 point" but in the case of a deer with 9 you'd have to adopt a new format to describe it in calling it a "4 by 5."

However, the western system is more descriptive of asymmetrical racks in that "4 by 6" is much more accurately descriptive in that case than "10 pointer."
