The Remington 870 is the universal standard issue American Shotgun. They have a screw in choke system, they are easy to clean, easy to take apart and clean., They are simple, and reliable.

STAY AWAY from MOSSBERG and also the Remington 887? I think, the one with the coating of plastic, they are shit.

However I would consider getting a camo remington 870 SUPER MAG. It shoots any 12 guage shell, so you can hunt anything from Dove to Turkey

I recommend a Remington or a Mossberg. I've owned both and are great guns, never had any problems. If you're looking to shoot at the range, get a 20 gauge but if you want to hunt at all, get a 12. Do some research yourself and look at reviews, it's a big purchase.

In your price range I would recommend a Benelli Supernova. If you want it for home defense you can get the tactical version or if you want to target shoot/hunt, etc. you can get a full length barrel setup. They come with optional camo, etc. but they start at $499 MSRP

I have a plain black 28in barrel Supernova and I couldn't be happier. The slide is super smooth and tight. It is a good weight. The recoil reduction system is a HUGE plus if you plan on shooting alot and/or heavy loads.

It will also accept 3 & 1/2in shells which is a must for some types of hunting plus its a blast to shoot 3 & 1/2 in shells once in awhile ;p

btw it comes factory with a plug in it only allowing 2 shells plus 1 in the chamber per hunting regulations but it is super simple to take it out allowing for 4+1 of regular 2/3in shells. It is also a relatively easy gun to clean and maintain.

And yes I would also go with 12ga

Edit- I do have a mossberg for home defense and their is a HUGE difference in apparent build quality between the 2..

/co-sign on what most people already posted, and for the reasons posted. Remington 870, Mossberg 500. Both reasonably priced, both have good reliability track-records, both have a ton of aftermarket.

Also /co-signing on the Benelli. They can be a bit more spendy, but the quality and workmanship is superb.

Why not get an automatic with the amount of money your willing to spend you could get an extremely nice used automatic
or a equally nice brand new one such as
Stoeger Model 3500
Baretta a300
or the remington supermag/nitro mag varieties

I myself am going to buy a browning a5 for myself for christmas if i can wait
But if your dead-set on a pump shotgun you're going to be just fine with a 870 or mossberg 500
me personally i'd go with a Benelli nova since it can chamber 3 1/2" shells.

i have about 2.5k into my shotgun. benelli m4 super 90, put a titanium full length mag tube, surefire m80 foregrip, collapsible stock, magpul front grip, set of tru dot tritium night sights, titanium 3/4" charging handle. This is when i thought there was going to be an apocalypse lol, now it's just my home defense shotgun and iv'e killed a few deer with it when i hunt in the lower counties that don't allow rifles.

Mossbergs are pretty cheaply made. The forestock rattles more than any other pump. +1 for the 870
