qualifiers dont matter, swimmers try to just make the final so the only time they go all out and swim their hardest is in the final. swimmers like phelps don't swim hard in the qualifiers, just hard enough to make the final. don't read much into this

yes true but most good swimmers are reserving their energy for the finals so it's still useful as an indication.

if he doesn't win the 100/200 fly its really sad for USA swimming. phelps is still our fly guy, even if its 4 years from beijing, lochte is our backstroker, hanson our breaststroker, we dont have a free styler...
