So I just watched Brotherhood again, first time since 2012 when I first watched it and man do I still enjoy the story of the Elric brothers and company but I have a different perspective now on the anime/manga as a whole. I now have two sons ages 6 & 3 and it's so funny how much of their personalities mirror Ed and Alfonse. My 6 year old is definitely Ed. Hot headed (especially losing at video games) selfish at times and is so loyal. My youngest obviously is Alfonse, never loses to his brother when they fight, compassionate, loving and has an iron will (already at 3!) but the most interesting part of all of this? Their bond between each other and their selflessness is what i see the most from them. The observant parent I am they share such a stronger bond between themselves compared to other brothers I see and other brothers they are friends with. No matter what one always picks the other up and get back into the fray of whatever they are doing. I imagine they would go through similar trials and tribulations to succeed in the world if their mother and I both vanished from their lives despite alchemy not existing they would go on a lavish adventure in life to find who they are and what they need to do together to fulfill their lives and succeed. It was definitely a different experience for me now that I am 30 years old and a parent. I saw things in the anime i didnt see before due to not being a parent and since i did not have children then I didnt have the comparison at the time nor the vision to see the themes i didnt catch in my first watch. I have two sisters and no brothers and I am the oldest child so i didnt really have that kind of experience to make brotherly comparisons before but I do now and let me tell ya I really enjoyed having a new view on this anime.
