never read either, but my understanding is that manga are picture books whereas light novels have very few pictures.

Light Novels are basically what we call teen novels that have around 10 pictures per 200 pages.

Manga are comics.

Light Novels: Gives you details and tells you exactly what is going on, minimal imagination needed.

Manga: Tells you what characters are saying, minimal information on surroundings and actions being done.

Personally, i prefer Light Novels, but i like both.

Not necessarily. Some light novels can be incredibly curt when describing a setting or trying convey a specific atmosphere. In which case illustrations help a lot to fill the blanks or provide something that the original author simply couldn't do.

this,

light novels have their focus on text and few pictures, while in mangas its turned around
