SAO has sold extremely well in terms of Blu ray and BD's, way more than enough copies to have a 2nd season again.
iirc it normally takes around 5,000 BDs+ to consider having a 2nd season. SAO was around 30k-50k sales.
The LN is also weekly/monthly ranked in the top 10 best selling LN"s in japan also.
Kirito and Asuna have also ranked top 5 characters in an anime weekly/monthly when it was airing.
