my favorite by far is sky island

just rewatched the whole arc and it is just fucking epic

the structure of the story is VERY WELL-PLANNED OUT

from the mysterious appearance of the humongous gigantic shadows (that appeared in the dark at the beginning) to the connection between the descendents of ancient ancestors, namely calgara and monblanc norland

the historical events that took place over the course of 400 years and their significance to the storyline as a whole, in which it also leads to the realization of nico robin's dream's existence (when she finds the poneglyph) and the connection to the pirate king, gol d roger himself.

everyone's problems come to a resolve, including the sky warriors and the sky islanders

the symbolism of the vearth (soil) is explicitly expressed as it is unrivaled by enel's lightning powers

the miraculous events that led to the piece of island jaya that made it possible for it to exist in the sky, and the ringing of the bell that symbolized the beginning of war, and the ringing of the bell again that symbolized the end of the war, as well as let monblanc cricket know that the city of gold is in the sky.

the giant python that lived through the horrendous 400 years all just to wait for the ringing of the bell again, reminisced about its past, and raged furiously as he headbutted the giant jack with an immense force

when nami saw the half of the house that was cricket's house on the sky island and concluded that it was the same piece of island jaya, it gave me hard goosebumps the first time i watched it

all in all, a masterpiece of art and story



my second favorite arc is arabasta, cuz when i first watched it, i always wondered how anyone could beat the logia types, and when luffy hit crocodile at the second encounter, i jizzed my pants





my 3rd favorite is enies lobby, when usopp's role in the pirate crew is made much more clear to me; he is the sniper. and he is the only one that can make the flag burn, or save robin from miles away

his heroic deeds reside in his ability to fight long range, and he is a very big asset to the pirate crew.

before this moment, i always hated usopp for being such a pussy, but now i respect him as a character to the fullest.

Progression, story, characters and character development, tactics, sheer epic.

If you have to ask then you clearly are not watching one piece for the right reasons.

If you want some specifics....

Crocodile was the first 'road block' for luffy. Arlong was a tough fight, but not a necessary one for luffy to progress. Crocodile was luffy's first introduction into a new realm of future adversaries.

The arc itself was the best story wise - a plot to take over an entire kingdom. So many people were involved - smoker, ace, robin, croc, chopper, etc. The events leading up to and during were all meaningful in their own way. There was quite a lot of wasted plot IMO during the sky arc.


More reasons why the sky arc shouldn't be #1.....enel was a good villain, but he was not a necessary step for luffy to progess. Also, he had an insane plan with little to no planning. He was immature, drunk on his own power. Crocodile was experienced, a veteran who had seen hell far worse than enel had.
