I might as well also post some other recent manga news

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-08-30/a-certain-scientific-railgun-manga-new-arc-delayed-due-to-artist-sudden-illness/.78073

And Yen Press licensed the Manga for Log Horizon and The Devil is a Part-Timer!
And they also licensed the Light Novels for No Game no Life, Log Horizon, and The Devil is a Part-Timer!.

So what is the difference between before and after liscensing? Is it just uploaded online, then after it gets popular, a company "buys/publishes" the series and officially releases physical copies of the light novel as volumes at the store?

Basically.

Baka-tsuki will pretty much remove all series that have been licensed (but you can still find online everything that has already been translated).

Yen Press recently started licensing a lot of Light Novels so this didn't happen that often before. They release around a new volume per series every 4 months so a lot of these series will take a few years to catch up to the Japanese release and others (like Index) will take a lot longer. It is very good for series like The Devil is a Part-Timer! where the fan translations for the novels were not that far in.

English release.

Sword Art Online already has 2 volume out
Accel World already has 1
Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatte Iru Darou ka - first volume gets released in a few months
Index - volume 1 comes out later this year

And next year they will start releasing Log Horizon, NGNL, and The Devil is a Part-Timer!.

This isn't including previous series they had already been releasing like the Haruhi and Spice and Wolf LNs

Also forgot they will also be releasing Kagerou Days and the SAO: Progressive series.
