I wonder if Kenpachi couldn't hear his sword for the same reason Ichigo couldn't at the beginning.

Well I think Renji has more hand to hand training. During the fullbringer saga Renji said that he trained a lot. Also I think there is more to this fight than just raw power.

I'm assuming by "Get back to your roots" Kubo means the original source of his spiritual powers.

Before Rukia gave him hers, he was able to see ghosts and whatnot; maybe he's supposed to develop that power.
