much like I loved the fuck outta macross & that harmony gold spinoff thing I totally just forgot the name of, as a kid, I can't say it's totally deep or whatever. Entertaining to a kid, for sure. I think it has a more substantial storyline, but it's more carefree, eva's got darker undertones to it.
if you want modern mecha, try the NGE remake movies first. it's still 'classic' tier, so you still might as well watch em.
then Macross Plus/Zero/ maybe F. F was kinda derpy. but it has its moments.
Star Driver - storyline's p. linear, but it's fun all around.
Patlabor movies (1989+), also classic mecha. good storyline & animation, especially for the time.
maybe bakuretsu tenshi. it's more of an action with.. weird 3d mecha.
wouldnt rank it in the same tier as those^, but it's okay too.

Right,if you can't see behind the symbolism than it's nothing special.I'm not gonna write an essay about it cause I'm too lazy and the internet is full of that as well.I didn't understand everything at first either but if you read about it a little you can see why it is so great.
