if the first thing that comes to your mind to describe Code Geass is mecha anime, then you understand nothing ...

LOL? So those giant mobile mechatronic suits, are indeed not mechanical. Good fucking logic, herp derp. As for what you listed, have looked into them all before and took no interest.

If you really like One Piece check out Gintama. It is a parody/comedy anime but has a lot of serious moments probably my most favorite anime atm. If you like the humor in One Piece you will probably also like it. Like One Piece it has a slow start but after 20 episodes you will get attached to the characters and the comedy gets better.

Baccano! - Based on your list you will probably like it
http://myanimelist.net/anime/5258/Hajime_no_Ippo:_New_Challenger unless you have not added it on your list
http://myanimelist.net/anime/5029/Major:_Yuujou_no_Ikkyuu movie of what happened between the first 2 seasons
http://myanimelist.net/anime/45/Rurouni_Kenshin and the OVA
Initial D, Eyeshield 21, Giant Killing, or Prince of Tennis if you like any of the sports.
http://myanimelist.net/anime/5941/Cross_Game (or http://myanimelist.net/anime/1065/Touch) if you like baseball
http://myanimelist.net/anime/1606/Kekkaishi
http://myanimelist.net/anime/5114/Fullmetal_Alchemist:_Brotherhood

just to list some

For someone who hasn't seen either FMA nor FMA:B, which of these would you recommend, or both?

The first version gives a slightly better introduction to some of the characters and has a few voice actors that I prefer over their counterparts in Brotherhood.
On the other hand it totally fucks up the story about halfway through and the ending is seriously unsatisfying, even after watching the sequel movie.
Brotherhood follows the manga version much more closely, has a faster pace and just feels a bit tuned up in almost every aspect (animation, art, audio).

That being said, they are both great entertainment and both have their pros and cons, but I prefer Brotherhood by a mile and that is the most common opinion I think.
If you feel like watching both then I'd suggest you to start with the first version so you won't feel disappointed with the other.
