Piccolo did train in the room of spirit and time. It was during the Cell games. Only 2 can train at a time for 1 day before the door closes forever. Piccolo wasn't able to do much to a Super Perfect Cell when Gohan was shooting the Kamehameha at him. Piccolo couldn't do anything in the Majin Buu series either because he was way outclassed. How do you expect Piccolo to keep up when he has no one else to fuse with or no transformations to obtain? He had his 15 mins of fame but like I said previously, it's not Piccolos fault he can't keep up. No one can keep up with Goku except for Vegeta. Not Yamcha, Krillen, Tien, Gohan, Buu. No one.
Gohan is/was the only one with potential to be the strongest. Even Vegeta said it himself. But he chose the life of a scholar.

Who said he can go SSGSS2? Does that even exist yet? We don't know if he will go SS3 yet. He might if the producers finally give us what we want. But remember that Vados was even shocked when she saw Goku go SSJ. She said "This isn't a regular Super Saiyan it seems" Which means Cabe's version must be different from Universe's 7 that we are used too.
Why is everyone coming up with far fetched conclusions? Just wait to see what happens.
