trying to find a new anime, ive watched so many series... some of my favorites are as follows:
Outlaw Star
Yu Yu Hakusho
Vandread
Gundam (all of them)
Fullmetal Alchemist
Naruto
Ah! My Goddess
Claymore
Black Lagoon
Cowboy Beebop
Blood +
Trigun
Samurai X
Samurai Champloo

so you see i the category does not mater as long as it is a well made anime with a good story...
of course i prefer action packed but it is not a necessity

Hunter x Hunter made by the same person that did Yu Yu Hakusho and has a new anime that is currently airing following the manga more closely.
One Piece - probably one of the best Anime with a really great story that just keeps getting better and better
Fullmetal Alchemist Broterhood follows the manga
Darker Than Black interesting anime Watch season 1 then ovas then season 2.
Gintama slow start and mostly about comedies and parodies but has its serious moments and a lot of action.

i watched brotherhood and i probably liked it better than the original series, watched darker than blakc and it was good. tried to watch one piece but the first 10 episodes didnt really get me interested. never watched gintama or hunter x though

There all kind sword based fighting or vampire based. and of course full metal alchemist brotherhood is more the manga style of full metal alchemist

i started blood-c but im waiting till there are a lot of episodes out so i can watch them consecutively

It's done airing, there is only 12 episodes.

I really enjoyed Stein's Gate (on of my current favourites).

Kind of reminded me of death note with how the plot was written, shown and moved forward in the series.

I'd like recommendations on similar anime.

themes? I enjoyed in Stein's Gate: humor, serious plot, more plot driven than action driven, romance

Watch Hunter X Hunter. At least follow the 2011 remake which follows the manga.
