It doesn't seem like a filler, but it seems that Kubo is rushing a few things. I agree though, the series should have ended with Aizen as the main villain. Ichigo should have killed him, and that would have been it. So much time and storyline was invested in Aizen, that unless Kubo invests the same time and storylines into the head quincy guy, then it will be a dud, imo.
Implying that he wasn't intentionally imprisoned to avert the slated Vandenreich invasion. The Vandenreich forces will decimate Soul Society and kill several captains (Yamamoto, Mayuri, Byakuya, Komamura).
Then, The Royal Guard will appear, leaving the Soul King vulnerable. Aizen will break out and formulate the Oken with the thousands of spirit particles from the deceased Shinigami
and kill the Soul King, claiming his righteous throne with that smug grin. Unless this happens:
