i just recently started watching anime and i've started really liking it and need a recommendation :)

the first series i watched was Kaze No Stigma, which sort of got me in to the anime scene, but the series finished incomplete
from there i tried to look up similar anime and came across Zero no Tsukaima/The Familiar of Louise the Zero

i tried it out and just yesterday i finished watching all 37 episodes of Zero no Tsukaima...it was amazing  i wish it didn't end there
i really got attached to the connection between Louise and Saito

i'd love to find a similar series with a blend of seriousness/action and also romance

i've watched the first few episodes of Shakugan no Shana but i don't think that there is a complete romance between Shana and Yuji in the anime series
by googling i found that Toradora! seems similar to what i'm looking for, but i haven't watched any of it yet
______________________________________________

tl;dr: looking for an anime series similar to Zero no Tsukaima with a complete romance and action/magic

Hey guys~

I just got into anime a week ago. I watched GitS (both seasons and the movies) about a year ago and loved it, pretty much thoroughly. However, I thought to myself that it was the gem of the genre, and gave no thought into looking up anything else. Then I stumbled on a song from Gurren Lagaan, and the comments recommended it as an awesome anime, so I gave it a shot. I loved it immediately; how charismatic Kamina was, Simon's erraticness, Yoko's rifle, it was awesome, so I finished it out. I still think it's a really good series, despite how many things I felt about it were completely retarded (you know what I'm talking about... who chucks galaxies?). I'm not really into mecha, and I think the second half was not only cheesy but poorly thought out, but I'll still defend that I thought it was an awesome show. Anyway, so I'm now hooked, and really want to get into some more anime, and I'd really appreciate some help finding new series. Here's the stuff I've found since, and what I've liked/disliked:

Clannad: Probably my favorite. I was iffy going into it with the harem attitude (seems like a lame plot device to me) that I'd read was abundant, but I shrugged and went with "what the hell". Loved nearly every minute of it, except I think the final scene w/ Nagisa and Tomoya and epilogue were kind of tacked on without much thought, just to give it a feel of completion. I bawled several times, and Tomoki was without question the main cause of it. Her story I felt was beautiful, personality fit well with her background, her breakdowns weren't overdone and filled the role quite nicely. Tomoyo and Kyou are the type of people I'd push children out of the way to hang out with, they were just so cool. And I thoroughly loved Tomoya's personality; unrestrained, motivation-less with regard to himself but eager to assist his friends. Oh, and throwing his homie to Tomoyo every time, awesome.

Last Exile: sounded to coincide with things I'm already into; sci-fi, steampunk, drama, perfect. I liked this despite feeling like some things were really off, like Tatiana and Claus crashing on ground together, and Lavi's personality change because of it; I know it's a touchy subject in Japan, but I feel like Claus or Tatiana at any one point could go up to Lavi and shout "nothing happened, mkay pumpkin?" and she'd be a lot more chilled out through the rest of the show. And escaping with Alvis... the first place I would've gone to was my flagship, not home, and I certainly wouldn't have stayed there looking for food. Still really liked it, even if I felt like I had to forgive some of the things I thought were off, or I didn't quite understand.

Angel Beats!: little bit of scifi, little bit of rage; I loved the character development for the characters that got them, and I think there should've been more. I was really about to complain on the last episode why Kanade didn't get *any* background, but then my heart skipped when I got it. Man, I'm a sucker for sad stories. I loved how she seemed to be an impenetrable individual, untouchable by anyone and everyone, but after her demotion seeking simple solace in food... it was heart-breaking. I also had to forgive this one a little bit, like late in the series when everyone but Yurippe were suprised to find out that Kanade wasn't an angel; I was pretty certain that this was clarified 10 episodes prior to characters jumping around screaming "NO WAY!". Regardless, I have a place in my heart for this one, too.

5 Centimeters Per Second: felt like a weaker version of Definitely, Maybe. I was really attracted to it on plot summary alone, but I felt sort of let down. The first chapter had me sucked in unbelievably hard, and the second left me a little torn, but the third one just shattered my hopes. I'm a sucker for romance, and I know that the story's told exactly how it's supposed to, but I feel like my heart was broken just because the author wanted to break it, and not out of any sense of story.

Voices of a Distant Star: in theory, sounded like exactly what I wanted 5cm/s to be, but a few things stopped me from loving it. I know it was written by one person, and I'm way willing to support one guy doing a shitload of work, but it was riddled with holes. Where was the female lead in the beginning of the story with regards to anything (if it's just symbolism for trying to get a message through, I'm gonna feel like ass for missing it, but I feel like I have to extrapolate too much for that to be true)? If the human ships are capable of FTL, why can't they perfect FTL communication, even if it means sending a dingy inbetween solar systems to carry messages? I feel like if I have to engage in war spanning an area larger than one AU away, then I'm going to *ensure* that communication is at the forefront of my technological tree. Imagine you're playing SC2, and you send your army to engage the enemy, but you don't find out if you won or lost the fight until either your army returns home, or your opponent's does; not happening, I would make sure my eyes were everywhere; furthermore, my technology is good enough that radio signals won't degrade over 8.6 light years, but I can't send them FTL? Aside from that, it looked like the fight didn't last at Sirius for very long; couldn't we, you know, turn around and go home? Prior to our messages reaching home in 8.6 years? The joint-thought clause I thought was a REALLY cool plot device, but then I had to argue with myself; is the 24 year old male lead speaking to the 15 year old female? Because she'd ended the fight 8.6 years ago, shouldn't he have joint thoughts with the one that's telling war stories to her friends on her battlecruiser? It didn't make any sense, maybe I'm reading too much into it, or maybe I'm just missing the point. Agh!

Toradora!: this show didn't seem like the type that I'd enjoy, with characters that had quirks that seemed unrealistic and situations that were sort of dumb, but I thought it was a lot of fun despite thinking I'm not really the target audience. I'm stopped at about 6 or 7, I plan to continue, but I read a spoiler on accident and it seemed to suck some of the fun out of it. I'll go onwards later!

Toaru Majutsu no Index: saw a lot of threads about it, checked it out. I don't really like an excess of magic in my TV, but pegging on the concept that there was scientific thinking behind the espers, I kept going. I'm only on episode six, and I feel really slapped around with a lot of movement without much explanation. For instance, the feathers I thought were supposed to be a death-touch. And then Shiyl, walking around some place and coming into contact with that upside-down test-tube dude, who wants him to kill a mage that he has to team up with in order to kill a mage. And that mage has the Imagine Breaker. Or something. I may have to re-watch that part, because it made positively no sense the first round, and I still haven't any idea why the mage he's supposed to team up with to kill that mage is a vampire. But, I was also extremely skeptical about the 85/15 brain usage conjunction with perfect memorization, and felt like 15% was a bit too large (by about 15%) of a mass of the brain that would be used up for a year's worth of memories, but that was cleaned up, so it's reasonable to assume it'd happen later, too. Anyway, I think it's pretty cool so far.

Planetes: described as a "hard sci-fi". I am intrigued. Watched the first two episodes, but the download's going real slow so I can't continue, but I like where it's going.

I apologize in advance for not knowing my genres real well. It'd be a lot simpler if I were asking for video game suggestions because I know what I like from there inside and out, but anime's completely foreign to me. I hope I gave enough specifications in my walls of text, and if it's possible, could I ask for assistance in learning them so that I can keep it concise my next time around?

Thanks a lot,

Thanks a lot,

well if you are trying to see everything to make sense that is a bad start bcuz you are suppose to look for the concept presented in certain anime ; i see anime as food for thought
but overall most anime make sense gets a better rating (generally we can sort out the concept easily)
if you are looking for realism slice of life /romance is your best bet
