Do you have any other examples of what you have seen ?

You could try chaos;head (it's dark and confusing kinda like higurashi s1 )

or Kara No Kyoukai , 7 movie series. somewhat confusing and dark as well. Simply nothing short of amazing.

Not entirely similar but I noticed you haven't watched Bakemonogatari.. I think you will like it :P
