and zaraki isn't an exception with his zanpaktou, he just doesn't give a shit about it, so it stays how it is.

what bases do you have of soi fon, seriously lol. back it up with some evidence.

Google youroichi zanpakutou and see if you can find someone or claims that she has one.
Her noble family could be a generations of hand to hand combat warriors.
Not all souls in soul society have zanpakutou but there are some that high level of reiatsu and can use kido and some with hand to hand combat capabilities.

Edit: Tessai also doesn't show any zanpakutou on him but he was a Captain.

What weapon would you use to help a friend with their sword skills? Hand or sword?
That flashback is more like a sparr or training for Kisuke.
Unless she actualy shown to have use a zanpakutou then i will always assume that she's a badass hand to hand combat character that can hand a captains ass.

a sparring buddy above your level of strength will help your skills no matter what, it forces you to fight at a better level to win or simply just not die
