That's prolly when he changed his goal to become a pirate king to becoming more powerful than whitebeard, so he can get revenge, & did whatever necessary to obtain great powa!

becuz iirc, when croc offered to join luffy, he kept saying about how he will be the one to kill whitebeard, and luffy said he won't let that happen
