author also claims that the marine ford war was just a side story, didn't think it was going to be "epic"
he claims in the future that he has sagas that puts marine ford in shame

you should probably state your sources. Not that I don't think the final war that is expected by a lot of people won't be epic, but for Oda to say "it was a side story" I doubt it. Too many things happened and it is the only reason that Luffy trained for 2 years and was prepared to enter the New World. There has been WAY too much foreshadowing of this as well in previous arcs. (Ace looking for Blackbeeard in Alabasta, Blackbeard and Ace fighting in the cover story, Strawhats learning Ace was in danger from Vivre card) I don't see how something with so much build could be planned as a side story. All this foreshadowing means he has had this planned for a VERY long time (since at least the Drum Kingdom arc which is the first mentioning of Black Beard). Meaning he wanted it to be a big event from the beginning. How could you possibly make a WB vs Marines a small deal?

There is no way he had intended that for a side story, that arc was a HUGE turrning point in the story. What Kasey said is correct.

Maybe he miss spoke and meant it was started as an side story with the whole ace&blackbeard fight, which then escalated into the main story while others were away training etc

I mean the story was sort regressing(or whatever), going back to different places (to save ace for example) and that is not part of the ever so linear one piece adventure story which so far had been "island -> next island"

Anyway i'm sad the authors sick, wish him all the well and hope he will return to the normal cycle after those 2 weeks
