Everytime a new character has joined the crew it has been somewhat obvious (lots of back story, lots of involvement, etc...)

Hard to say. I was personally waiting for Oda to say something about a connection with Gol D. Roger. But who knows.

well, actually we never saw anyone die in OP. Even Ace could be alive somewhere, because he wasnt pwned with Haki, but only with another logia. Could be in comma. Never saw his dead body. Same for whitebeard.

Not to mention resurrection fruits or techniques
