tl;dr mainstream = what most people like.

GitS isn't mainstream (knowning =/= liking). I know far more people that didn't like it, than did like it.
And if you still insist, just look how old it is.. First movie is 15 years old already. And it get even more famous when Wachowski brothers admited GitS was an inspiration for them while making Matrix Trilogy.

It's a classic and a must watch, not mainstream crap.
