Since when show focused on politics, philosophy, social issues with complex story line is "kiddy" stuff. (won't even comment mainstream part, lol.)

You can call Ergo Proxy "kiddy" stuff while comparing it to GitS.

and im pretty sure it's mainstream. everyone knows of it / its on cartoon network with bleach/naruto and all those other mainstream shows
