Vegeta was humbled in the Buu series. He accepted the fact that Goku is the strongest in the Universe. So no it doesn't look weird that he is humbling to Whis for the mere fact that he can make Vegeta stronger than Goku is plenty reason enough to see Vegeta do what he has to do to become Whis's pupil.

I couldn't stop laughing when Krillen asked Goku to punch him in the face. Great scene. Especially since they went down memory lane.
