He wasn't trying to protect his brother he wanted sasuke to achieve mangkyou sharingan so he could steal his eyes and obtain a mangkyou sharingan that wouldn't deplete his eyesight every time he used it.

Itachi, according to Madara, wanted to protect Sasuke, and he would even betray his duty to fulfill that end. So his little brother must have been everything to Itachi.
