Lol i hate code geass so much, one of the least original things i've seen. Also hate anime that thrown in a ridiculous amount of tragedy just because that's the easiest way to elicit a strong emotional response, it leaves the plot in tatters and you can't relate to any of the characters because their actions are so ridiculous but at least you felt something right? It also thinks it's a lot cleverer than it is, death note wasn't perfect but did a much better job of showing what an intelligent person with power might be able to do and how they might act in certain situations (until the end). Here if you actually think about what's going on you will spend half the time asking yourself 'why doesn't he do ----?' and 'if he's so clever how come I thought of ---- and he didn't?'

Anyway for personal favourite would probably go with Hellsing Ultimate or Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Although as works of art: flcl, afro samurai, samurai champloo

AOT had a lot of promise but didn't end up as one of the best, despite shorter overall run time then many half the episodes ended up being pretty boring with lots of flashbacks and shots of random crap filling up time. Half an episode is people whining about stuff then although the action is top notch its pretty ridiculous, the titans go from being a massive threat and virtually impossible to kill to cannon fodder depending on the situation. Then the whole thing doesn't work when you have people like captain levi who are op enough that they should be able to take down a whole army of normal titans in the blink of an eye.

Love avatar but normally doesn't get counted as anime, I think it's pretty racist that only the japanese can produce anime but guess you could say it needs japanese language

honestly, if they remade it and expanded it across 100+ more episodes, which could totally be possible, i would watch it again.

it's just like several other products. even if it's made with the same recipe, the location it was made determines what it can or can't be called.
wine/alcohol is a great example to compare this to.

classic example:

The Champagne wine region (archaic English: Champany) is a historic province within the administrative province of Champagne in the northeast of France. The area is best known for the production of the sparkling white wine that bears the region's name. EU law and the laws of most countries reserve the term "Champagne" exclusively for wines that come from this region located about 100 miles (160 km) east of Paris.

Bebop

will remain timeless forever

This was a very close second for me. I will always love this show. In my opinion it was also a real masterpiece.

I also enjoyed Steins Gate. Though at this point I don't even care about posting about the "best" anime since it's all based on the preference of whoever is watching it.

Judgemental people's posts are such a pain to read

Some of my favorites are Clannad, K-on, and Cross Game. Not into that ultra violent stuff/dark stuff usually

Really surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet because I'm sure it's super cliche, but...

Akira.

I thought FLCL was the best for a long, long time... I fell out of watching anime for about 10 years because, for me, nothing matched the caliber of art and story telling like FLCL did. Just 6 episodes, perfectly told, expertly animated.

Then recently, I saw Akira. Holy shit, what a trip! The manga has even better art in it too! I hate to dethrone FLCL as it was a huge part of growing up for me, but it's the honest truth, Akira is the best piece of animation I have ever witnessed.

Of course, your mileage may vary...
