They were pirates, they deserved it.
I think they looked a bit more surprised and maybe a little scared at his capabilities, wiping out all the pirates and their ships with no real effort was shocking to them.

Might be true :> but you don't know that for sure, as it felt like they often got raided but no real casualties (imo), like when the pirate spoke to bellows and she just said take the stuff and leave

Quite frankly it was quite an excessive use of force, he didn't need to vaporize them all. That girl ask for help not annihilation.

What she had in mind was probably something like cause severe damage to a ship and then go all "yo guises if you want to live release dem" which would of been more than sufficient.

Dude got issues.

The guy was a born soldier and never experienced life outside fighting so it's not really his fault.

I felt like his actions were a little excessive, and they're probably going to spend some story resolving that issue, (inb4 he faces a decision whether he should fight or not sometime in the anime), but what dragonox said, even in the first episode he couldn't remember when he felt fear, he just goes into battle thinking like a soldier, no sympathy or emotions.

even when Chamber said he could go on leave to Alavon for a month after that first battle he didn't seem to care much.

He's honestly just another robot up to this point.
