There is 1337 gozu fighter, who was never beaten down. The main char beats him down and wowla, he says there is another genius and he was just a shit etc..

i think he could beat croc

he learned the gears after fighting croc
in between arlong and croc i dont remember him learning anything specifically strong

Maybe arlong didn't train much and just used his natural strength as a fishman and experience to fight? ... Unlike Luffy who trained his whole life and also was fighting with Ace until he was 14.
