Because aizen was experimenting with hollowfying soul reapers as a way to increase their powers, but the souls he was testing it on were to weak.  So he decided to try it on soul reapers which also failed.  So they sent a captain out and he  used it on him, and the other viazards when they tried to help and they got kicked out of hte soul society for being part hollow.
